Built in the sixteenth century by Raja Man Singh in a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles in which skillful teams of artisans have created a rugged imposing exterior and a warm and welcoming interior to the fort and details of royal hunting scenes adorn the walls giving an insight into the lifestyles of Rajput society. As one steps inside the cool walls of the fort, ones eyes are treated to carvings and mirror work of an exquisite nature. Amongst several other attractions inside the fort is Ganesh Pol with images of the elephant god Ganesh painted on it. Then there is Diwan-i-Aam or Hall of the Public Audience whose spectacular pillars display the extraordinary skills of the craftsmen of that era. Sukh Niwas, Kali Temple and Jai Mandir are other highlights of the fort. It is indeed a rewarding experience to walk through the corridors of the palace. Elephant rides offer the chance to enter the fort in the manner of a king - watching the landscape unfold at a sedate pace. The animals are restricted to a few trips a day up and down the steep slope to the fort and after many years are attended by a full-time team of veterinarians. A visit to Amber Fort is the highlight of any trip to Jaipur – The Pink City – which ever way you choose to arrive. |
